Description

This print is taken from a 17th century wood carving from the artist Hans Holbein the Younger’s “Dance of Death” series. The print serves as a “Memento Mori,” meaning “Remember Death” in Latin, and is meant to depict that death spares no one. Memento mori is the medieval theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

In this print, titled “The Abbess,” death drags the abbess (a female superior of a community of nuns) away, while she holds on to her rosary and her abbess-staff. Inside the monastery, one of the nuns is screaming. Death is draped with feathers, which are common in depictions of fools.
